With the rise of AI technologies and post-pandemic layoffs, job cuts in the software industry appear to have no end, particularly at Meta.
Waves of layoffs
Following multiple waves of layoffs in various divisions, the social networking behemoth is now focusing on its Facebook Messenger division.
According to two persons familiar with the situation, Meta’s popular messaging software Messenger was the latest Meta department to be laid off this week.
Messenger’s reorganization and operations resulted in layoffs impacting fewer than 50 people.
According to Business Insider, some Instagram employees were also laid off in addition to Messenger personnel.
Elimination of TMP Positions
Both Instagram and Messenger have apparently eliminated multiple technical program manager (TPM) positions, putting all of the responsibility on product managers.
This rearrangement occurred after Instagram dissolved the TPM role, and other divisions of Meta, including the Facebook organization where Messenger is headquartered, are expected to follow suit.
About 20,000 employees Layoff
Meta let off around 20,000 people in 2023, the majority of them were managers, to stop years of “hyper-growth.” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg declared 2023 to be his “year of efficiency” for this reason, but it appears that the slogan will continue to be in effect in 2024.
This long-term tendency of layoffs has also resulted in a substantial cultural shift at Meta, with certain managers taking delight in uncovering cost-cutting opportunities or team downsizing.
Certain employees have developed a persistent sense of uneasiness as a result of the continuous reorganizations.
