Consider being able to play some of your Steam games while sitting inside a Tesla electric vehicle, thanks to the RDNA 2-powered infotainment system. According to a recent tweet from CEO Elon Musk, that is the company’s long-term goal.
Tesla previously stated that the redesigned infotainment system in the Model S and Model X is “on-par with today’s newest consoles” and has 10 TFLOPs of power.
According to VideoCardz, it has a Navi 23 GPU with 28 compute units clocked up to 2.8 GHz, and a teardown revealed it also has a quad-core Ryzen Embedded CPU, most likely a Zen+ model.
On its 17-inch, 22001300 display, the games on the new infotainment system should look good. Previous press images suggested that owners would be able to purchase The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. Musk responded to a question about when the latter title would be available for the new Model S/X by tweeting: “We’re working through the general case of making Steam games work on a Tesla vs specific titles. Former is obviously where we should be long-term.”
The SpaceX CEO, who recently came under fire for comparing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to Adolf Hitler, also appeared to confirm that Cyberpunk 2077 would be coming to Teslas, adding that the system has more storage to handle larger games.
Tesla has been expanding its Tesla Arcade game platform and collaborating with developers in the hopes of eventually selling game bundles to vehicle owners; having access to Steam could mean playing (some) games you already own.
Musk previously said that “entertainment will be crucial when the automobile drives itself.”
Tesla confirmed in December that it would disable its Passenger Play feature, which prevents video games from being played on the center console while an EV is in motion.
The announcement came amid an investigation into the feature by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
