Liz Lopatto laments the TikTok- and ad-ification of Instagram and other social media platforms in a recent (and very humorous) blog article. “Would someone kindly create a straightforward, clean-cut photo app and let me know where it is so that my friends may join it? She enquires. She wasn’t the only one, it seems, as Instagram is already beginning to roll back some of its modifications in response to user concerns.
Many recommendations for alternative photo sites where you could upload your cat pictures and other adorable, amusing, or stunning images so that your friends and family could view and discuss them quickly flooded the comments area of Liz’s post. I looked at a few of them (and some that I found elsewhere).
The majority of the websites on this list all focus on still photos (rather than pressuring you to watch quick films), support a range of operating systems, and enable comments. Despite the fact that we’ve also included a few for-pay sites, most feature at least a basic free component.
They do have another trait, though, which makes it considerably less likely that someone you don’t know would notice and follow your work: they are not as widely recognized. It’s generally preferable to hang out where the people are, even if the location doesn’t suit your tastes. This might be a significant problem, particularly if you’re just getting started as a creative.
But if you’re serious about photography, many of these websites offer a community where you can talk to other photographers about your work (and the work of others) and receive encouragement and company.
