Jake Elliott can be happy it was only a preseason game. He missed some important kicks, but his team gave him another chance. It was an Eagles vs. Ravens game. Elliott made a 49-yard field goal with no time left. The Eagles won 16-13 over the Ravens. He missed an extra point in the first quarter. His 50-yard kick hit the upright with 16 seconds left.
Then, Ravens quarterback Emory Jones got sacked and fumbled. Patrick Johnson recovered it. This gave Elliott another chance.
“That was lucky,” Elliott said. “Not the game you want.”
At nearly the same spot where he missed, Elliott made the kick this time.
“Hopefully, we got those out of our way,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. “Jake Elliott will be better because of this.”
Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts did not play. Ravens quarterback Josh Johnson and Eagles quarterback Kenny Pickett did not score much. At the end, it was Ravens rookie Devin Leary against Tanner McKee. Leary tied the game at 13 with a fourth-down sneak from the 1 with 5:46 to play.
After Elliott’s missed field goal, the Ravens put Jones in. That was a mistake.
“He feels bad, but he’s just starting,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “The speed of this game is different. He’ll learn from it.”
After winning 24 preseason games in a row, Baltimore has now lost three straight.
Tucker’s Early Kick, Pickett’s TD Highlight Eagles vs. Ravens
Ravens’ Justin Tucker started the scoring with a 46-yard field goal in the first quarter. The Eagles answered with a 15-play, 75-yard drive. It ended with Pickett’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Will Shipley. Elliott missed the extra point.
Baltimore settled for a 21-yard field goal early in the second quarter. That was all the scoring for the half.
The 38-year-old Johnson, now Baltimore’s No. 2 quarterback, went 4 of 12 for 62 yards. Leary came on and went 6 of 10 for 37 yards.
Pickett, a first-round pick by Pittsburgh, was traded to the Eagles. He got plenty of work in this game. He went 14 of 22 for 89 yards and a touchdown.
Philadelphia tested cornerback Nate Wiggins, Baltimore’s first-round draft pick, a lot early. He did well and had three passes defended.
“I thought they went at him, which was good to see,” Harbaugh said. “When you’re a corner of his level, he wants that.”
In the second half, Wiggins went into the injury tent with a shoulder problem.
