Discord includes a useful feature called Activities that allows you to play built-in mini-games on a voice channel without requiring any installation.
This feature may soon be expanded, as the social platform has indicated that it will integrate third-party games.
This is because, beginning March 18, Discord will provide third-party developers with tools for creating Discord-compatible games and applications.
Similar to Activities, these third-party apps will most likely be integrated directly into the app.
Initially, users had access to 19 activities. However, Discord is now trying to expand significantly by providing third-party developers with the required capabilities.
This comes in the shape of the newly released Embedded App SDK, which allows developers to construct their own activities.
Discord stated in its announcement post:
We want Discord to grow into the best place for developers to do it all: build, share, distribute, be discovered, and monetise their work.
We want Discord to be where your App gets its start, where it finds a home in the communities of people around the world, and where it can be easily shared between friends.
If you want to see what you can build, you already can. Hop into a Voice Channel and use the Rocket button to try out today’s available Activities with your friends.
Discord has revealed that it is experimenting with a means for users to attach new games and apps to their accounts, allowing them to be used outside of servers. Developers will be able to activate this feature. Testing is scheduled to begin on March 18th.
