The Alpha 5, the company’s first electric car, has been revealed by DeLorean Motor Company. The four-seater sedan takes the DMC-12’s gull-wing doors from the Back to the Future film series, but that’s about all it has in common with the original.
The base performance model will have a 100+kWh battery with a range of over 300 miles and a peak speed of 155 MPH that is electronically restricted.
DeLorean claims a 0-60 MPH pace of 2.99 seconds and a sprint time of 4.35 seconds to 88 MPH. At this time, there is no indication on further performance tiers or pricing.
“The Alpha 5 is a representation of the past 40 years of DeLorean,” said Troy Beetz, chief marketing officer of DeLorean Motor Company. “There was this enormous responsibility to make sure we honoured the history of the DeLorean brand, but an even greater responsibility in curating its future… I think we did both with the Alpha 5.”
What do you think of the overall styling? I was getting a lot of Audi TT Quattro vibes at first, but the more I look at it, the more I like it.
The back and overhead views are very appealing, and the inside isn’t awful either. The gull-wing doors are a tad gimmicky, but they make sense as a tribute to the past.
To be clear, this is not the same DMC that manufactured the original DMC-12. That company went bankrupt in the early 1980s.
DMC’s residual parts inventory and naming rights were subsequently bought by a new firm created in the mid-1990s. DMC Texas, as it is often known, is the company working on the new EV.
