A Microsoft company’s vice president of enterprise and OS security, says that the recent CrowdStrike outage hit about 8.5 million devices, or less than 1% of all Windows computers in the world.
These are the first real numbers that either Microsoft or CrowdStrike have given about how bad yesterday’s outage was.
CrowdStrike’s Security Software
The outage was caused by an update to CrowdStrike’s security software that caused Windows computers to crash. (This did not happen on Mac or Linux machines.)
Even though only a few devices were affected, the damage was done all over the world and in many places. Including banks, stores, trading firms, rail networks, and more. All over the world, airlines stopped all flights.
“Even though only a small number of devices were affected. The big effects on the economy and society show that CrowdStrike is used by businesses that run many important services,”
He did not say what number of Windows computers running CrowdStrike software were harmed.
Also, it’s important to remember that if just one computer crashed, it could bring down a whole network or server.
Also, Weston wrote that “even though this wasn’t a Microsoft incident,” the company was working with CrowdStrike to fix it.
It might take a while for systems to get back to normal if each affected computer has to be fixed by hand.
Microsoft and CrowdStrike Solution
Microsoft and CrowdStrike have created “a scalable solution that will help Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure accelerate a fix” and are also working with Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform.
