As NEV sales in China account for more than half of total automotive sales, the importance of EV batteries and their ability to charge quickly has grown.
CATL, the Chinese battery manufacturer, has unveiled its new cutting-edge Shenxing Plus battery on the stage of the 2024 Beijing Auto Show.
The Shenxing Plus’s energy density of 205 Wh/kg is an important figure. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are less expensive and safer than other battery types, hence automakers have been utilising them in less expensive vehicles. In terms of energy density, they were inferior to NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) batteries.
LFP’s Promised Safety
This meant that, despite LFP’s promised safety, the only way to provide a longer range while reducing battery weight was to employ the more expensive NMC. Shenxing Plus now has an energy density similar to numerous NMC batteries, at 205 Wh/kg.
CATL used a self-developed 3D honeycomb material to increase the energy density of the anode and manage the expansion of the charging and discharging volumes.
CTB 3.0 (cell to body) technology also helps with space utilisation, since it gives the battery an integrated shell structure and increases volume efficiency by 7%.
