ToggleBalochistan’s Deputy Commissioner Zakir Baloch
Balochistan’s Deputy Commissioner of Panjgur, Zakir Baloch, was assassinated by unidentified armed men in Mastung District on Monday. The tragic event unfolded while Baloch was traveling on the National Highway near the Khada-Kucha area in Mastung, accompanied by District Chairman Malik Jan and Ahmed Jan, heading towards Quetta.
At least 15 armed men fired upon the car carrying the Deputy Commissioner and his companions, causing severe injuries. Both Zakir Baloch and his friends sustained bullet wounds and were immediately taken to a nearby hospital. Despite receiving medical treatment, Baloch tragically succumbed to his injuries, while his friends were transferred to Quetta Civil Hospital’s trauma center for further treatment.
The security situation in Balochistan has been deteriorating over the past several years, largely due to the increasing presence of foreign-sponsored militant groups in the restive province. This assassination is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by government officials and the general populace in the region.
On X, journalist Iftikhar Firdous reported, “At least two dozen attackers fired at the car of Deputy Commissioner of Panjgur and killed him; locals said that militants had set up a checkpoint and were searching for government officials.” The assassination of Zakir Baloch highlights the grave dangers that officials in Balochistan continue to face amid rising militancy.
Reacting to the attack, Pakistan’s highest authority, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, condemned the incident and expressed deep sorrow over the death of DC Zakir Baloch, who was martyred in the line of duty. The assassination of Balochistan’s Deputy Commissioner underscores the critical need for enhanced security measures to protect government officials and restore stability in the troubled region.
