Workers at an Apple Inc. (AAPL.O) shop in Atlanta submitted a petition for a union election on Wednesday, hoping to become the company’s first U.S. store to do so amid a wave of labour movement at other large corporations.
According to a news release released by the union and workers engaged in the endeavour, the Communications Workers of America is supporting the action at the Apple store in Cumberland Mall.
According to the union, more than 70 percent of the more than 100 workers eligible to join – in sales, technical, creative, and operational jobs – signed cards expressing a willingness to organise.
The US National Labor Relations Board’s Atlanta office received the union petition on Wednesday, according to a representative for the agency.
The NLRB works with the union and the employer to schedule an election if certain requirements are satisfied.
“We work hard at Apple because we believe in the products and the company, and we want to make sure that every Apple employee can afford nice housing and basic living expenditures,” said Elli Daniels, an Apple employee who is involved in the union movement.
Apple did not reply to demands for comment right away.
Apple is famed for its reserved culture, but last year some current and former employees used the hashtag #AppleToo to publicly criticise the company’s working circumstances.
