Apple has officially confirmed that Tim Cook will step down as CEO later this year, marking the end of a transformative 15-year tenure. Having led Apple to become the world’s most valuable company and reaching unprecedented market milestones, Cook’s departure represents a historic shift for the tech giant. He is scheduled to officially hand over the reins this coming September.
John Ternus Appointed as Successor
John Ternus, currently the Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, has been named the next CEO of Apple, effective September 1, 2026. A 25-year veteran of the company, Ternus is widely respected for his deep understanding of Apple’s culture and product DNA. Alongside his promotion to CEO, he will also take a seat on Apple Board of Directors.
Legacy of Innovation and Hardware
Ternus is best known for overseeing the successful transition to Apple Silicon, the custom chip architecture that redefined the Mac and iPad lineups. His leadership in hardware engineering has been pivotal to the success of recent iPhone and Mac generations. Tim Cook praised Ternus as a leader with an “innovator’s soul,” expressing full confidence in his ability to guide Apple’s future.
Executive Chairman Role for Tim Cook
While stepping down from day-to-day operations, Tim Cook will remain closely involved with the company as the Executive Chairman of the Board. In this new capacity, Cook will pivot his focus toward global government affairs, environmental initiatives, and navigating the increasing regulatory challenges Apple faces worldwide, while Ternus manages the core business operations.
Broader Executive Reshuffle
This leadership transition has triggered a wider reorganization within Apple’s top ranks. Notably, Johny Srouji, the architect of Apple’s chips, has been promoted to Chief Hardware Officer, absorbing many of Ternus’s former responsibilities. This strategic reshuffle is designed to ensure a seamless transition and maintain Apple’s momentum in tightly integrating hardware and software.
