Google, though, has thrown its own ideas into the mix, allowing anyone to take advantage of the new functionality with android. The search giant is working on bringing satellite SMS capabilities to all Android 14 phones (with compatible hardware, of course).
Apple‘s newest iPhones popularized satellite messaging by allowing users to send out emergency SOS notifications even while they were disconnected from the internet. Soon, Samsung will also introduce a satellite-based messaging service.
The feature of Android 14 is limited yet
The feature will initially trickle out to Samsung and Pixel phones after its initial release, and then to other phones. This is not unexpected given that Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra has been experimenting with satellite calling for some time now.
How far it can communicate via satellite is currently unknown. It’s also worth noting that not all phones with the current version of Android will have satellite messaging implemented by their respective original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
The official launch of Android 14 is also approaching. As usual, it will make its debut at the same time as Google’s next-generation Pixel smartphones, which are scheduled to be unveiled in October. It has been speculated that TSMC, rather than Samsung, will supply the bespoke Tensor G3 chipset that will power Google’s Pixel 8 smartphones.
