The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has begun the process of converting all citizens’ computerized national identification cards (CNICs) into digital wallets.
The project is part of the federal government’s Digital Pakistan strategy, and NADRA is exploring making the vision a reality as an update to an existing mobile application.
Chairman NADRA, Tariq Malik, stated in this regard that NADRA has launched ‘Pak Identity,’ and that the digital wallets idea would be launched as an upgrade to this program.
By enabling remote identification and electronic know your customer, it will enable contactless banking, enhance financial inclusion, improve ease of doing business, and support e-governance activities.
Furthermore, the move will help to transform the national ID ecosystem by providing public convenience and will be a huge step toward finally eliminating traditional physical ID.
The digital ecology of NADRA relies heavily on Pak Identity. It has a variety of functions, including biometric fingerprints, facial recognition, and a document scanner, and allows users to apply for CNICs online.
Fraudulent purchases are more difficult to make using digital wallets. For purchases, digital wallets use a unique number and transaction code. The card number is not shared with the merchant when you pay at a store.
