Early research of the free-to-play MMORPG Diablo Immortal found that building a fully maxed-out character would cost you a little bit more than $100,000.
At least one player claimed to have spent that much money on the game, but as a result, encountered an unanticipated issue.
JT from the YouTube channel jtisallbusiness claimed in a video posted on July 31 that he spent a significant amount of money on Diablo Immortal—roughly $100,000—to create a very powerful character.
The whale dominated the competition and built a record that is so impressive that the matchmaking algorithm practically has trouble matching him up with opponents.
When JT contacted Blizzard about the particular issue more than a month ago, he was told to post about it on the company’s forums.
Although there were over 100 responses, Blizzard has not yet released any official statements.
JT eventually got a response following a surge in media coverage. JT claims in a video from August 2 that a Blizzard representative told him they had “authorized a repair” and will “install it in the next upcoming days.”
Unfortunately, JT didn’t provide any other information about the repair, so we’ll have to wait till the patch is released to see how Blizzard responds.
Early in June, Diablo Immortal was released, and it received a lot of negative feedback. With a score of 0.3 out of 10, the divisive MMORPG is currently tied for the last position with Madden NFL 21 and received the lowest user score in Metacritic history.
A score this low, however, should be viewed with caution in the age of review bombing.
That is particularly true given that in less than two months, revenue from the game’s mobile version exceeded $100 million. It’s obvious that not everyone finds the game to be crap.
For most people, investing almost $100,000 in one game seems unimaginable, yet huge spenders, or whales, do exist and are crucial to a game’s success – especially if they can persuade friends with similarly deep money to join them.
