Twitter revealed today that it is testing a “CC” button that would allow users to toggle on or off video subtitles.
According to Twitter, the capability is currently available to select iOS users and will be available to Android users shortly.
The CC button will appear in the top-right corner of a video that has subtitles accessible, according to a video uploaded by social media.
“For some of you on iOS, and soon on Android, it’s now easier to pick between video captions and no captions,” the firm stated in a tweet. “We’re testing the possibility to switch captions off/on using a new ‘CC’ button for videos that have captions accessible.”
Last December, Twitter introduced auto-generated subtitles for videos to make them more accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing users.
Auto captions are accessible in more than 30 languages on the web, iOS, and Android, including English, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Thai, Chinese, Hindi, and others.
Today’s announcement follows on the heels of Twitter’s recent global rollout of new alt text accessibility capabilities.
An “ALT” label will now appear in the corner of images with alt text. The user-generated picture description appears when you hover over the badge.
Over the last few months, Twitter has been experimenting with a variety of features. The business was most recently seen working on a feature that would allow users to establish a status on their profiles and tweets.
Users will not only be able to choose a profile-level status, but also a status for an individual tweet, according to reports.
It’s unclear if users would just be able to choose from pre-defined statuses or will be allowed to establish their own.
