The Alibaba Cloud AI Hackathon Pakistan 2026 grand finale brought together hundreds of young Pakistani developers in Islamabad on October 24, marking the biggest AI competition the country has seen so far. The competition attracted more than 16,000 applications nationwide, with 749 participants presenting 300 AI projects at the final stage after qualifying through regional rounds in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. For a country still building its AI talent base, those numbers are hard to ignore.
What Is the Alibaba Cloud AI Hackathon in Pakistan?
Alkhidmat Foundation’s Bano Qabil and Alibaba Cloud launched the AI Hackathon 2026, a nationwide competition built to connect Pakistani talent with world-class technology, mentorship, and investment. The collaboration was formalized between Alibaba Cloud (Singapore) Private Limited and Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan, with support from Cognix Solutions Private Limited, Alibaba Cloud’s authorized partner in Pakistan.
The AI Hackathon 2026 is designed as a full pipeline: participants build practical artificial intelligence solutions that address real-world challenges, and the strongest projects do not stop at a demo day. Selected teams will be showcased to investors, industry leaders, and international technology partners, opening pathways to commercialization, strategic partnerships, and global market exposure.
Grand Finale at Pak-China Friendship Centre
The grand finale took place at the Pak-China Friendship Centre in Islamabad from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on October 24, 2026. The finalists presented AI-powered solutions across six categories: smart agriculture, healthcare, education, financial inclusion, Urdu and regional language technology, and open innovation.
The choice of categories is deliberate. Pakistan faces real gaps in each of these areas, and the organizers clearly want solutions built for local needs, not just polished demos. The Urdu and regional language technology category in particular stands out: very few AI tools work well in Urdu or in Pakistan’s many other languages, and a homegrown solution in that space would have real commercial value.
The competition focused on building working AI products rather than merely presenting ideas, with participants receiving structured training, mentorship and access to AI development tools. The hackathon provided participants with access to cloud resources, AI development tools, expert mentorship, technical guidance and opportunities for national recognition.
Why This Is Bigger Than One Event
The hackathon is part of a much deeper commitment by Alibaba Cloud to Pakistan. Alibaba Cloud and Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish dedicated Alibaba Cloud Training Centers in Pakistan under Alkhidmat’s flagship Bano Qabil platform, aimed at equipping Pakistani youth with globally recognized skills in AI and cloud computing.
Under the agreement, two dedicated Alibaba Cloud Training Centers will be established in Pakistan, one at the Bano Qabil Incubation Center in Karachi and the other at the Bano Qabil Innovation Center in Lahore. These centers will deliver Alibaba Cloud’s AI and cloud computing curriculum, enabling participants to pursue internationally recognized professional certification pathways.
This also connects to government-level discussions. Ignite National Technology Fund and Alibaba Cloud plan to collaborate on secure, localized AI and cloud solutions for Pakistan, and the partnership includes a nationwide AI and cloud skills program targeting 500,000 individuals, including developers, students, and public sector employees, through trainings and certifications. That scale sets a meaningful target for Pakistan’s digital workforce.
This kind of investment in local developer talent is directly relevant to Pakistan’s IT export ambitions. As one keynote speaker at a regional hackathon event put it, “if we properly equip our graduates and youth for the AI universe, not only will our IT exports grow, but the entire IT ecosystem will transform, paving the way for a technology-driven society.” That link between AI skills and export revenue is one that policymakers and industry leaders keep coming back to. From Users to Builders
Shahid Iqbal, CEO of Bano Qabil Pakistan, said the hackathon represented an important step towards moving Pakistani youth from being users of AI technologies to becoming builders of solutions that address local and global challenges.
He said Bano Qabil’s objective was not only to provide young people with technical skills but also to create opportunities where they could apply those skills, receive mentorship and connect with the wider technology ecosystem.
Speakers also highlighted the growing importance of international collaboration in advancing AI innovation and noted that the hackathon is intended to provide young innovators with opportunities to demonstrate their capabilities while fostering entrepreneurship, research, and technology-driven economic development.
The partnership is also non-commercial. The partnership includes recurring AI Hackathons under the theme “AI for Pakistan’s Future”, providing young Pakistanis with opportunities to develop innovative and practical technology-driven solutions for challenges of national importance. Running the program on a non-commercial basis lowers the barrier for students and young developers from lower-income backgrounds to take part.
