PEMRA suspends Geo News: PEMRA pulls Geo News off air for 15 days

Update (03 July 2026): Since the suspension took effect, Geo News has issued a formal public apology, removed the programme Safar-e-Ishq from its platforms, and confirmed that disciplinary action has been initiated against the staff responsible. Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar has also weighed in, warning broadcasters against dramatised depictions of religious events. Separately, a number of religious scholars have called for a permanent ban rather than a temporary suspension, keeping public pressure on the regulator. The Council of Complaints process is ongoing and could result in further regulatory action beyond the 15-day blackout.

PEMRA suspends Geo News with immediate effect for 15 days, the regulator announced on June 27–28, 2026, after the country’s leading news channel aired what authorities described as sensitive religious visuals during its special transmission for the 10th of Muharram. The order, issued under Section 30 of the PEMRA Ordinance 2002, requires Geo News to go dark across satellite and all cable and distribution platforms for the full suspension period.

What did Geo News broadcast and why did PEMRA act?

Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, is one of the most solemn occasions in the Islamic calendar. This year it fell on June 26. Geo News aired a special transmission to mark the day, including a programme titled Safar-e-Ishq. According to the PEMRA suspension order, that transmission included visual content — religious imagery and depictions — that the regulator classified as unacceptable sensitive religious visualisation.

PEMRA said the broadcast of such material, given Pakistan’s religious and cultural context, amounted to a serious regulatory concern. The authority stated that displaying this kind of content could hurt the religious feelings of viewers and had the potential to undermine religious harmony and disturb public peace and law and order. The regulator also noted that the broadcast was inconsistent with its own directive issued on June 15, 2026, regarding the observance of the sanctity of Muharram-ul-Haram — meaning Geo News had prior notice of the standards expected. On that basis, the regulator moved quickly and ordered the suspension with immediate effect.

PEMRA suspends Geo News under Section 30 of the 2002 Ordinance

PEMRA, which stands for the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, was set up under the PEMRA Ordinance 2002 to regulate and oversee private electronic media in Pakistan. Section 30 of that Ordinance gives the authority the power to suspend a broadcaster’s licence when it finds a serious violation, without waiting for a full inquiry to finish first. That is the legal tool PEMRA used here.

The PEMRA order also cited breaches of Section 20(b), (c), (d) and (f) of the Ordinance — provisions that require broadcasters to preserve national, cultural, social and religious values, and prohibit content that encourages religious discrimination or sectarianism. The suspension order covers all platforms. Geo News transmission must stay off satellite as well as all cable networks and digital distribution services for the 15-day period. This means viewers who watch via cable, dish, or any other distribution network are all affected equally. This kind of regulatory pressure on legacy broadcasters mirrors wider shifts in Pakistan’s media and tech landscape; for instance, JazzCash vs Easypaisa are now playing very different games in 2026, as digital platforms increasingly fill the space that traditional broadcasters once dominated.

Geo News ordered to hold an internal inquiry

Beyond simply going off air, Geo News has also been directed to conduct an internal inquiry into how this content made it to broadcast. Specifically, PEMRA wants the channel to look at failures in its editorial process, its content monitoring systems, and its compliance checks. The findings of that internal review must then be submitted to the Council of Complaints.

This is a standard step PEMRA takes in serious cases. It requires the broadcaster to examine what went wrong inside the organisation, rather than just accepting the external penalty and moving on. It puts some of the responsibility for fixing the problem back onto the channel itself.

Geo News has already taken initial steps in that direction: the channel issued a public apology, stating the material had been aired in error and did not reflect its editorial policy or beliefs, removed the programme, and said it had initiated disciplinary action against the staff involved.

If you want to understand how PEMRA approaches media content rules specifically around the Muharram period, our earlier explainer on PEMRA media rules around 10 Muharram covers the regulatory framework in detail.

Pakistan’s media rules around religious occasions

Pakistan’s broadcast rules are particularly strict when it comes to religious content. The Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisements) Code of Conduct places clear limits on material that could be seen as disrespectful or provocative in a religious context. During Muharram, PEMRA has historically taken a close watch on how channels cover the occasion, because of the deeply sensitive nature of the commemoration for many communities. The June 15 directive that Geo News reportedly disregarded is itself evidence of how proactively the regulator communicates its expectations ahead of the observance.

This is not the first time Geo News has faced regulatory action. The channel has a long and well-documented history with PEMRA, including a 15-day suspension as far back as June 2014 over a defence ministry complaint, as well as repeated show-cause notices and fines in the years since. Each time, the core legal mechanism has been the same set of powers under the PEMRA Ordinance, the rules of which apply equally to all licensed broadcasters in Pakistan. Broader questions about governance frameworks for media and technology in Pakistan are also coming into sharper focus: the AI governance commission that launched this month highlights just how fractured the country’s regulatory rulebook for emerging platforms remains.

What this means for viewers

For the 15-day period, Geo News will not be available on any broadcast or cable network in Pakistan. Viewers who rely on the channel for news updates will need to turn to other sources during this time. The channel’s digital and online presence was not directly addressed in the suspension order, which specifically named satellite and distribution networks.

The 15-day clock started from June 27–28, 2026, which means the suspension is set to run until around July 12–13, 2026, unless PEMRA takes further action or the channel successfully challenges the order through the courts. Given that the Council of Complaints has been formally tasked with examining the case and can recommend additional regulatory action if warranted, the matter is not yet fully closed even after the blackout period ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did PEMRA suspend Geo News in June 2026?

PEMRA suspended Geo News because the channel aired sensitive religious visuals in its programme Safar-e-Ishq during a special transmission for the 10th of Muharram. The authority said this content risked hurting religious sentiments and disturbing public peace, and that the broadcast also violated PEMRA’s own June 15 directive on Muharram content standards.

How long is the Geo News suspension?

The suspension is for 15 days, starting from June 27–28, 2026, with immediate effect, and is expected to run until around July 12–13, 2026. During this period, Geo News must stay off satellite and all cable and distribution platforms across Pakistan.

What legal power did PEMRA use to suspend Geo News?

PEMRA acted under Section 30 of the PEMRA Ordinance 2002, which allows the authority to suspend a broadcaster’s licence when it finds a serious regulatory breach, even before a full hearing is completed. The order also cited violations of Section 20(b), (c), (d) and (f) of the same Ordinance, along with multiple clauses of the Electronic Media Code of Conduct 2015.

What has Geo News done in response to the suspension?

Geo News issued a public apology, removed the programme Safar-e-Ishq from its platforms, and confirmed that disciplinary action has been taken against the staff involved. The channel has also been directed by PEMRA to conduct a formal internal inquiry into the editorial, monitoring, and compliance failures that led to the broadcast, with findings to be submitted to the Council of Complaints.

Could Geo News face further punishment after the 15-day ban?

Yes. PEMRA has referred the matter to its Council of Complaints for examination, hearing, and recommendations. The Council can recommend further regulatory action if it finds the circumstances warrant it under the law, meaning the 15-day suspension may not be the final word on this case.
