the Government of Sindh’s Home Department has issued a formal notification on April 10, 2026, regarding new operational hours across the province. This move is reportedly part of the government’s “Austerity Policy,” aimed at conserving fuel and energy amid the ongoing economic situation. The new regulations have reportedly been implemented with immediate effect, and all district administrations have been directed to ensure strict compliance.
Revised Market and Shopping Mall Timings
-
General Districts: Reportedly, all shops, markets, and shopping malls in all districts must close by 08:00 PM throughout the week.
-
Divisional Headquarters: For major divisional headquarters, the closing time has reportedly been set at 09:00 PM.
-
Weekend Rules: These timings reportedly apply to all seven days of the week, including Saturday and Sunday, without any weekend exemptions for retail businesses.
Exceptions for Essential Services and Shops
Reportedly, the government has identified several essential services that are exempt from these restrictive timings to ensure public convenience. According to the notification, the following will remain open as per their normal routine:
-
Medical Services: Pharmacies, medical stores, hospitals, clinics, and laboratories.
-
Food Essentials: Tandoors (standalone), milk/dairy shops, and bakeries.
-
Fuel Stations: Petrol pumps and fuel stations are reportedly allowed to operate without the 8 PM or 9 PM restriction.
New Schedule for Restaurants and Food Outlets
Reportedly, the hospitality sector has also been given a specific window for operations. All hotels, restaurants, and food outlets are reportedly allowed to remain open for dine-in services between 07:00 PM and 11:30 PM for dinner. However, the notification reportedly clarifies that there are no restrictions on home delivery and takeaway services, allowing citizens to order food late at night without any hurdle.
Operating Hours for Marriage Halls and Banquets
-
Strict Window: All marriage halls, wedding banquets, and halls must reportedly operate only between 08:00 PM and 12:00 Midnight.
-
Austerity Measures: This measure is reportedly aimed at reducing the heavy electricity load caused by late-night wedding functions across the province.
Implementation and Enforcement by Authorities
Reportedly, the Additional Chief Secretary, Muhammad Iqbal Memon, has authorized Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners to enforce these orders. The notification reportedly states that the Sindh Police will provide full support to the district administration to ensure that no violations occur. Local authorities have reportedly been warned that any shop or restaurant found operating beyond the permitted hours will face legal action or heavy fines under the current austerity laws.
The Strategic Goal of the Austerity Drive
Reportedly, the primary goal of this directive is to reduce the province’s overall energy consumption and decrease the dependency on expensive fuel imports. Analysts suggest that by closing markets early, the government reportedly expects a significant drop in the evening peak power demand. While the business community has reportedly expressed concerns, the government maintains that these “tough decisions” are reportedly necessary for the long-term economic stability of the province.
