Google Messages to Introduce ‘Delete for Everyone’ Feature, Similar to WhatsApp

Google Messages is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to delete messages for all participants in a conversation, similar to WhatsApp’s “Delete for Everyone” option. This update, discovered through an APK teardown of the Google Messages beta app, is expected to enhance the messaging experience for Android users by providing greater control over sent messages. The feature is currently in development and will apply to Rich Communication Services (RCS) chats, marking another step forward in Google’s efforts to modernize its messaging platform.

What to Expect from the New Message Deletion Feature

The new “Delete for Everyone” feature will enable users to remove messages not just from their own devices but also from all recipients’ devices. Once a message is deleted, a notification will replace it, informing participants that the message was removed. This functionality mirrors WhatsApp’s popular feature, offering users greater flexibility and privacy in their conversations. However, there’s a catch: users will have a 15-minute window to delete a message for everyone. After this period, the option to delete the message remotely will expire, and users will only be able to remove it from their own device. This time constraint ensures that the feature is used responsibly while maintaining the integrity of conversations.

Compatibility and Requirements

The “Delete for Everyone” feature will rely on updates to the Rich Communication Services (RCS) Universal Profile. As a result, it will only work on devices running the latest version of Google Messages. Users with older versions of the app may not support the feature, meaning deleted messages could still remain visible to some recipients. This highlights the importance of keeping apps updated to access the latest features. RCS technology, often seen as the successor to traditional SMS, already offers advanced features like read receipts, typing indicators, and high-quality media sharing. The addition of the “Delete for Everyone” feature will further bridge the gap between Google Messages and other popular messaging platforms, providing Android users with a more robust and versatile communication tool.

Current Status and Future Rollout

The feature was discovered during an APK teardown of the Google Messages beta app, indicating that it is still in the testing phase. While Google has not officially announced a launch date, the progress suggests that the update could be rolled out to users in the near future. This development aligns with Google’s efforts to make its messaging app more competitive and user-friendly. As messaging apps continue to evolve, features like “Delete for Everyone” are becoming increasingly important for users who value privacy and control over their conversations. By introducing this functionality, Google Messages is taking a significant step toward meeting user expectations and staying relevant in the competitive messaging app landscape.

Enhancing the Messaging Experience

The introduction of the “Delete for Everyone” feature is a welcome addition to Google Messages, offering users greater flexibility and peace of mind. Whether it’s correcting a typo, retracting sensitive information, or simply removing an unintended message, this feature will empower users to manage their conversations more effectively. As Google continues to refine its messaging platform, features like this demonstrate the company’s commitment to improving user experience. With RCS technology at its core, Google Messages is poised to become an even more powerful tool for Android users, rivaling other popular messaging apps in functionality and convenience.

Conclusion

The upcoming “Delete for Everyone” feature in Google Messages is set to bring a much-needed functionality to the app, aligning it with competitors like WhatsApp. While the 15-minute time limit and compatibility requirements may pose some limitations, the feature represents a significant step forward in enhancing user control and privacy. Android users can look forward to a more versatile and reliable messaging experience in the near future. This update underscores Google’s dedication to evolving its messaging platform to meet the needs of modern users, ensuring that Google Messages remains a strong contender in the world of instant messaging.
