Apple plans to debut the generative AI-powered iOS 18 next month at the Worldwide WWDC event, and we now have an early look.
According to sources, iOS 18 will include many of the same AI services that are already available on Android phones, such as article summarization, image editing, voice memo transcription, and more.
Siri’s conversational capabilities will also get some enhancements soon. Here is what Gurman stated:
As part of the changes, the company will improve Siri’s voice capabilities, giving it a more conversational feel, and add features that help users with their day-to-day lives — an approach it calls “proactive intelligence.”
That includes services like auto-summarizing notifications from your iPhone, giving a quick synopsis of news articles and transcribing voice memos, as well as improving existing features that auto-populate your calendar and suggest apps.
On-device Processing
Gurman stated that Apple will largely apply on-device processing for its AI features, but will also use cloud services in data centres built with high-end Apple silicon chips designed especially for the Mac. On-device AI computation should reduce lag and increase privacy.
AI chatbot Inside
He also stated that, unlike other technology companies, Apple will not include a ChatGPT-like chatbot in its planned AI services, despite recent allegations that Apple was developing an AI chatbot inside. Apple officials have reportedly admitted that they are “playing catch-up” within.
Hopes are strong for Apple’s first big step into AI, which is expected to be presented during next-gen software update demos at WWDC beginning June 10.
