Earlier this week, the Kane Williamson-led side advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Ireland by 35 runs, bringing their points total to seven with a healthy run rate of +2.113.
After defeating Sri Lanka, the Jos Buttler-led side finished second in the Super 12 stages with a healthy run rate, effectively ending Australia’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
England advanced to the T20 World Cup semi-finals on Saturday with a tense four-wicket win over Sri Lanka, ending the title defence of defending champions Australia. Ben Stokes hit a gutsy unbeaten 42.
England needed to win to advance from Group 1 alongside already-qualified New Zealand, and they did so with two balls to spare in a nail-biting finish.
It is worth noting that New Zealand, England, and Australia all have seven points, but due to better run rates, New Zealand and England will face off in the semi-finals.
