Pakistan is ranked 99th out of 132 economies in the Global Innovation Index (GII), which ranks the world’s economies according to their ability to innovate. The country is ranked seventh among the ten economies of Central and Southern Asia.
The Global Innovation Index, which consists of over 80 variables divided into innovation inputs and outputs, strives to capture and convey the multifaceted character of innovation around the world. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized body of the United Nations, publishes it.
By offering an innovation rating of 132 economies, the GII fundamentally underscores the notion that innovation is a key engine of economic success. It has established itself as an authoritative gauge of innovation and a “tool for action” that economies can use to guide their innovation agendas throughout the last decade.
In terms of Pakistan, this year’s ranking is an improvement over last year’s. In 2020, it was 107, and in 2019, it was 105.
“Pakistan is ranked 17th among the 34 economies in the lower middle-income group,” according to the GII research. “Among the 10 economies in Central and Southern Asia, Pakistan is ranked seventh.”
Pakistan outperformed the lower middle-income category on four fronts, according to the report: institutions, business sophistication, knowledge and technology outputs, and creative outputs.
Pakistan outperformed the regional average in all four of the aforementioned areas in Central and Southern Asia.
