Babar Azam, Pakistan’s captain, set a new record by scoring 114 runs in the second one-day international (ODI) against Australia, leaving cricketer-turned-politician Prime Minister Imran Khan in the cricket history.
Pakistan had just completed their most successful run chase in one-day internationals, chasing down a massive mark of 349 to beat Australia by six wickets in Lahore, tying the series at 1-1.
Pakistan skipper played a key inning as he hammered a scorching hundred in pursuit of a mammoth total of 348. Babar has now surpassed Imran Khan’s record of most runs scored as a captain against the Australians.
Imran Khan set the mark with an 82-run inning against Australia in 1990, thus Babar has now broken it after almost 32 years.
Babar’s incredible performance included 11 boundaries and a six-wicket win. Babar, who has been chastised for his poor scoring rate, had a strike rate of 137.34 percent.
The highest individual scores by a Pakistani captain versus Australia are as follows:
Babar Azam – 114 (2022)
Imran Khan – 82 (1990)
Javed Miandad – 74* (1987)
Meanwhile, Babar Azam set a new global record by becoming the fastest batsman to score 15 one-day international (ODI) centuries.
The star batsman has now scored 15 hundreds in 83 innings, overtaking South African icon Hashim Amla’s record of 86 innings. No other batter has ever hit 15 hundreds in under 100 innings.
