Lesser sales of cigarettes packs around the nation show the abrupt impact of the Federal Excise Duty (FED) and price rise under the mini budget, the Finance Supplementary Bill 2023.
Urban retailers and wholesalers informed a local news organization that cheap costs also played a significant influence in tobacco sales and that they appreciated the government’s dedication to shielding its residents from the risks of smoking.
The increase in the Price on tobacco, in the opinion of retailers and wholesalers, is a significant step towards lowering tobacco use and improving public health.
“Though it is a business loss for me, but this continues to campaign for tighter tobacco control regulations to further reduce smoking rates in Pakistan,” said Shafiq Ahmed, a seller in Islamabad.
Govt. issued SRO to increase FED on Cigarettes
The government issued an SRO to raise FED on February 14, 2023. The FED has doubled the price of cigarettes (Rs. 16500/- per 1000 cigarettes if the initial price on the package exceeds Rs. 9000 per 1000 cigarettes) and updated taxes on locally produced cigarettes as a result of the notification.
Social activists claim that increasing the price of cigarettes is a tried-and-true strategy for cutting down on tobacco use.
This method makes cigarettes more expensive, which may deter people from smoking, especially young people.
Additionally, smoking cessation programs and anti-smoking advertisements may be funded with the extra tax revenue.
It is crucial to advance public health by increasing the price of smoking products in Pakistan. One of the biggest government initiatives in Pakistani history involves raising taxes by around 150%.
This action will increase the price of cigarettes, deterring young people from smoking who are frequently drawn in by its affordability.
Several civil society organizations have praised the government’s choice to raise taxes on smoking, calling it the most efficient way to lower the nation’s tobacco use.
According to their representatives, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has made a historic move to safeguard the public’s health by approving SRO by the government in this regard, which aimed to increase the excise tax on smoking.
