In a first for the technologically advanced nation of South Korea, a robot will lead an orchestra.
The National Orchestra of Korea announced on Thursday that it will lead a concert at the end of this month, making history in South Korea.
In Seoul’s Haeoreum Grand Theatre on June 30, The Orchestra, a traditional Korean music orchestra under the National Theatre of Korea, will perform “Absence” with a robot conducting.
It will be the first machine orchestra show in South Korea, while they have led orchestras before in Japan and Switzerland.
There will be versatile robots
The “EveR 6” android machine, created by the Korean Institute of Industrial Technology a year ago, has a humanlike body and the ability to use its neck and arm in a variety of ways.
At the concert, both the robot and conductor Choi Soo-yeol will take the stage individually before combining forces to lead the performance.
“I will demonstrate how human conductors surpass robots in real-time interaction and communication, showcasing my leadership and musical interpretation skills,” he stated about the impending performance, as reported by Yonhap News of South Korea.
