According to sources, the federal government has restored Saturday as a holiday for government workplaces and educational institutes, reinstating a two-day weekend.
A suggestion was submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in this respect during a federal cabinet meeting earlier today in Islamabad.
The idea was issued as part of the Power Division’s attempt to preserve energy in the face of a growing electricity shortage. In addition, the Power Division advocated a variety of remedies, including modifying market operation hours.
The news comes a day after Defense Minister Khawaja Asif proposed that the government implement a 4.5-day work week, with Friday half-days and Saturday and Sunday declared holidays from now on.
A similar summary was sent to the federal cabinet two weeks ago, it should be noted. However, the PM then rejected the proposal during the cabinet meeting held before his departure to Turkey on a three-day official visit.
PM Shehbaz said shortly after his election in April that the two weekly holidays will be abolished soon, with just Sunday being celebrated as a holiday in government agencies and educational institutions.
