South Africa defeated New Zealand by 190 runs in the 32nd match of the ICC World Cup 2023 here on Wednesday, led by Keshav Maharaj’s four-wicket haul after dominant centuries by Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen.
Keshav Maharaj’s 4-wicket haul
Set to chase a daunting 358, New Zealand’s in-form batting lineup fell short, managing only 167 before being bundled out in the 36th over.
Glenn Phillips, New Zealand’s middle-order batter, batted a brave half-century, scoring 60 off 50 with four boundaries and four sixes.
New Zealand’s other significant contributors were opening batter Will Young (33) and Daryl Mitchell (24) while the rest of their batters failed to reach double figures.
South Africa’s Bowling Attack
South Africa’s bowling attack was led by Keshav Maharaj’s 4/46, followed by Marco Jansen’s 3/31.
After winning the toss, New Zealand invited South Africa to bat and removed their captain Temba Bavuma in the ninth over with the score at 38.
Rassie van der Dussen and Quinton de Kock then combined for 200 runs for the second wicket in 189 balls.
During the partnership, Quinton de Kock completed his fourth century in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 before Tim Southee sent him back thanks to Glenn Phillips’ catch at backward point.
His innings totaled 114 off 116 balls, with ten boundaries and three sixes.
South Africa were 238-2 in 40 overs when David Miller joined Van der Dussen and added 78 runs off 43 balls for the third wicket in a quick 78-run partnership.
Tim Southee broke the partnership once more, this time by castleing South Africa’s other centurion Van der Dussen, who scored his second century of the tournament.
Van der Dussen made 133 runs off 118 balls, hitting nine boundaries and five sixes.
On the other end, David Miller maintained his aggressiveness, scoring 53 off 30 balls with two boundaries and five sixes.
