It was reported by an international magazine that Netflix credentials and passwords are no longer to be shared outside individual households in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The move is a part of the streaming giant’s broader drive to crack down on the common practise of exchanging passwords. In an interview, a Netflix support agent verified that the new rule went into force on July 20.
According to the spokesman, the new policy restricts sharing of Netflix accounts to those living in the same household. Netflix will track the WiFi networks and IP addresses of all subscriber devices to ensure compliance with these terms.
Netflix has restricted password sharing
Netflix has also reached out to subscribers in India who use their accounts for household sharing, enforcing the same rules. More than a hundred countries, including the US, UK, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, and Brazil, had already implemented such limitations, as reported by Mashable.
However, Netflix has also added a new feature that allows subscribers to add a non-household member to their account for an additional monthly charge. According to Mashable, this procedure has been simplified, allowing users to switch to a new account without losing their previous viewing history or personalised recommendations.
To boost profits, Netflix began its crackdown on password sharing early this year in the United States, its largest market.
