The Metal AI startup founded by Pakistani entrepreneur Usman Gul has closed a $4.5 million seed round, backed by two of Silicon Valley’s biggest names: a16z Speedrun and Y Combinator. Gul announced the news on September 2, 2026 through a social media post, marking one of the most closely watched Pakistani founder comebacks in recent memory.

From Airlift’s Ashes to Metal’s Rise

To understand why this round matters, you need to know the backstory. Gul co-founded Airlift in March 2019, a Pakistani startup that started as a bus-hailing service before pivoting to quick-commerce grocery delivery. Over three years, Airlift raised $120 million from global investors and expanded to eight cities in Pakistan plus South Africa. Then in July 2022, it shut down completely, unable to survive the brutal economics of instant delivery.

Most founders take years to bounce back from a public failure at that scale. Gul did not wait long. Before starting Metal, he had also been part of the early teams at DoorDash and Marqeta, giving him a rare mix of operator experience on both sides of the Pacific. That background shaped exactly what he decided to build next.

What the Metal AI Startup Actually Does

The Metal AI startup is built around a simple but painful truth Gul lived through at Airlift. During those three years of fundraising, his team spoke with roughly 300 investors, and about 80 percent of them were simply not the right fit for Airlift’s stage, sector, geography, or cheque size at the time. That wasted time on both sides added up to a serious drag on the business.

Metal fixes this with an AI-native platform that acts as an operating system for the entire capital formation process. The platform helps founders identify which investors are most likely to back them, maps warm introduction paths through existing networks, and provides an in-app copilot that guides founders through each step of a live funding round. Think of it as a smart layer between a founder and the venture ecosystem, cutting out the guesswork.

More than 100 YC-backed founders are already paying customers, and the platform is also used by founders backed by a16z and Techstars. That kind of early traction from top-tier startup communities is a strong signal of product-market fit.

The Investors Behind the $4.5M Round

The seed round was led by a16z Speedrun, the highly selective accelerator arm of Andreessen Horowitz that accepts fewer than 0.4 percent of applicants, and Y Combinator, the world’s best-known startup programme. That combination alone is rare, having both lead a single seed round signals serious confidence in the founder and the idea.

The round also drew participation from Pioneer Fund, Rebel Fund, Gaingels, Indus Valley Capital, Team Ignite Ventures, and Phaze Ventures. The presence of Indus Valley Capital, a Pakistan-focused VC, alongside global names is notable. It shows Pakistani institutional money is following Pakistani talent into global markets, not just funding local plays.

This was not Metal’s first external validation either. Back in June 2026, Rebel Fund had already made a strategic investment in Metal and partnered with the company to offer Rebel’s portfolio companies a discount on Metal’s plans. The seed round formalised and scaled what was already building.

Metal’s Revenue Numbers Are Already Real

What separates this round from a typical early-stage bet is that Metal already has strong commercial traction. According to Gul, the Metal AI startup has posted six consecutive quarters of 30 to 80 percent quarter-on-quarter revenue growth, and is on track to close FY2026 with multi-million-dollar annual revenue. For a seed-stage company, those are serious numbers.

This growth profile is part of why a16z Speedrun and YC were willing to co-lead. They are not just backing an idea, they are backing a product with paying customers, real revenue, and a founder who has already navigated the VC world from the inside.

Why This Matters for Pakistani Founders

Pakistan has a deep pool of technical and entrepreneurial talent, but founders here consistently cite fundraising as one of the hardest parts of building a company. Reaching the right investors, getting warm introductions, and knowing who is actually active at your stage and sector is genuinely hard when you are based in Lahore or Karachi rather than San Francisco.

The Metal AI startup directly solves that problem. A tool that maps the venture ecosystem with AI precision could level the playing field for Pakistani founders who do not have alumni networks at Stanford or MIT. It is no coincidence that Indus Valley Capital, which backs Pakistani-founded companies, joined this round.

This story also adds to a growing pattern. Pakistani founders are increasingly winning backing from the most competitive programmes in the world. If you want more context on that trend, read about how Pakistani founders beat a YC rejection to land Kleiner Perkins, a similar story of resilience paying off.

Metal has also published a thesis on where private capital markets are heading, signalling that Gul sees this as a long-term infrastructure play, not just a fundraising tool. The ambition is to become the operating layer that founders use throughout their entire company life cycle, from first cheque to growth rounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Metal AI startup?

Metal is a Pakistan-based AI startup that builds an operating system for fundraising. It uses artificial intelligence to help startup founders find the right investors, map introduction paths, and manage the full capital formation process more efficiently.

Who founded Metal and what is their background?

Metal was founded by Usman Gul, who co-founded Airlift Technologies in 2019, raised $120 million for it, and shut it down in July 2022. Before Airlift, Gul was part of the early teams at DoorDash and Marqeta. He is now the CEO of Metal.

Who invested in Metal’s $4.5M seed round?

The round was led by a16z Speedrun (Andreessen Horowitz’s early-stage accelerator) and Y Combinator. Other investors include Pioneer Fund, Rebel Fund, Gaingels, Indus Valley Capital, Team Ignite Ventures, and Phaze Ventures.

Is Metal only useful for Silicon Valley founders?

No. The platform is designed to help any founder navigate the global venture ecosystem, including those based in Pakistan and other emerging markets. This is especially relevant for Pakistani founders who face geographical disadvantages when trying to access the right investors.
