Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court (LHC) has ruled that marketplaces in the provincial capital can remain open till midnight.
He issued the directive during the hearing on environmental petitions. Following the LHC’s order, markets in Lahore will be open until midnight on weekdays and 1 a.m. on weekends until Eid.
During the hearing, the Member Judicial Commission informed the court about the traffic congestion caused by limited parking places at restaurants and large dining halls.
The court asked the restaurant owners to present a parking plan at the next hearing.
In a troubling disclosure, the Member Judicial Commission informed the court that dead chicken meat is utilised in shawarmas at Tollinton Market.
The health department and food authorities have been informed, and raids have begun. Previously, the LHC had allowed restaurants in the provincial capital to operate from Iftar to Sehri.
