With iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, Apple established a new devoted application that removes the ability to hide passwords in Settings.
While many people use only one or two passwords for all things, with the arrival of Apple’s iOS 18, an exclusive application will replace the current Passwords menu in Settings and add new features such as surfacing Wi-Fi network passwords, managing passkeys, 2FA tokens, and providing potential breach notifications.
By making this app more accessible, Apple hopes to raise consciousness of its built-in security features, urging users to rely on them instead of less secure alternatives.
Apple already implemented password sharing in iOS 17, which allowed users to create and share password groups.
The application could have an impact on businesses such as 1Password, though Apple’s basic offering may not meet all user needs.
The Passwords app is expected to be available for Windows in the future, making it more useful for cross-platform users.
The updates will be announced at WWDC on June 10, which is expected to be a software-focused event featuring Apple AI developments.
