School trips may soon become more environmentally friendly, thanks to recommendations from responsible authorities calling for the deployment of electric vehicles to replace existing public transportation for educational establishments.
According to reports, the Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change has proposed electric vehicles for student transportation to schools, colleges, and universities.
This is a not-so-surprising issue in light of rising smog and air pollution, with the Ministry of Climate Change stating that automobile emissions account for 43% of overall air pollution in the country.
Senator Seeme Ezdi presided over the conference, which examined Pakistan’s worrying smog condition as well as systems for monitoring and improving air quality.
Industrial facilities, cars, and brick kilns, according to Secretary of Climate Change Sikandar Qayyum and EPA DG Farzana Altaf Shah, are the main sources of air pollution.
Various preventive actions must be implemented if air pollution is to be eliminated. The committee was informed, for example, that 20 of the 63 brick kilns in the federal capital had installed pollution control technologies to mitigate the detrimental consequences.
In a similar spirit, the committee emphasized the need of environmental preservation by providing incentives for people to switch to electric vehicles. The conversion of educational transportation vehicles to electric cars was also unanimously endorsed.
Senator Faisal Javed stated that Prime Minister Imran Khan had accepted the challenge of addressing environmental challenges and had done a fantastic job so far, which the international community praised.
He went on to say that a number of projects had been launched in this direction, including a ten-billion-tree plantation, dam construction in 10 years, and the Lahore urban forest.
Seeme Ezdi, the committee’s chairperson, emphasized that it was a responsibility to ensure a safe atmosphere for Pakistanis.
