Islamabad, Jan 20, 2025: The Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED), in collaboration with the U.S. Mission in Pakistan, successfully hosted the concluding Policy Dialogue for the Climate Action Fellowship 2024 at F-11 College, Islamabad. This milestone event marked the culmination of a yearlong fellowship aimed at empowering 50 educators from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) as climate champions, transforming grassroots initiatives into impactful policy recommendations.
With the global climate crisis intensifying, KP remains particularly vulnerable due to its fragile ecosystems, frequent floods, and accelerating glacial melt. Educators, uniquely positioned at the nexus of knowledge and community, have the potential to play a pivotal role in mitigating these challenges through advocacy, awareness, and actionable initiatives.
Fostering Collective Action
“This fellowship enabled collective action through educators in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” said Dr. Fozia Parveen, Assistant Professor at AKU-IED and Principal Investigator of the fellowship. “By connecting grassroots initiatives to governance, we aim to drive sustainable, long-term change.”
During the event, two books authored by the fellows were launched: a fiction novel and a short story compilation, alongside a notable student contribution from Chitral. These publications highlight the creative and educational dimensions of the fellowship’s impact.

Integrating Climate Education into Policy
The dialogue brought together policymakers, educational experts, and fellows to explore strategies for integrating climate change education into provincial and national frameworks. Senior representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Climate Change, and the KP government actively participated in the discussions.
While signing the Letter of Notification, Mr. Masood Ahmad, Secretary of the Elementary & Secondary Education Department, KP, emphasized the importance of such initiatives. “This project has provided opportunities for teachers in KP passionate about the environment to drive local action. We in the department welcome such initiatives in the future, as climate change impacts us daily.”
Showcasing Grassroots Initiatives
The event featured:
- Presentations on fellowship outcomes and grassroots projects.
- A policy dialogue aligning climate education with national priorities.
- A showcase of 50 grassroots initiatives, including reforestation efforts and waste management campaigns.
A highlight was the panel discussion featuring prominent educationists and environmental experts, including:
- Dr. A.H. Nayyer, Renowned Pakistani Physicist and Scholar.
- Sarah Mehmood, Manager of Environment and Social Safeguarding, WWF.
- Dr. Qaisar Imran, Manager of Research, National Institute of Disaster Management.
- Dr. Farid Panjwani, Professor and Dean, AKU-IED.
- Dr. Riaz Hussain, Assistant Professor and Head, Professional Development Centre Chitral, AKU-IED.
Incentivizing Scalable Projects
The fellowship’s top 20 projects received incentives to promote scalability and sustainability. These initiatives reflect innovative approaches to climate education and action, demonstrating the transformative potential of empowered educators. Fellows stressed the urgent need for curriculum reforms, teacher training, and community collaboration to advance climate education across Pakistan.
