Nahid Islam, 26, often wears a Bangladeshi flag on his head. He studies sociology. Nahid led the protest that removed Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She ruled for more than 15 years.
Nahid coordinated a student movement. They fought against job quotas. The protest turned into a campaign to oust Hasina. He became famous in July. Police detained him and other students. Protests became violent. Nearly 300 people died. Many were students. The violence stopped when Hasina resigned. She fled to India on Monday.
Nahid Islam Rejects Army Rule, Proposes Yunus as Adviser: Bangladesh
Nahid and other student leaders planned to meet General Waker-Uz-Zaman. The meeting was at noon on Tuesday. Zaman said Hasina resigned. He said there would be an interim government.
Nahid speaks firmly in public. He said students won’t accept an army-led government. He proposed Muhammad Yunus as chief adviser. He said, “Any other government is not acceptable.” He posted this on Facebook on Tuesday.
On Monday, Nahid stood with other student leaders. He told reporters, “We won’t betray the blood of martyrs. We promise security, justice, and a new political future.”
Nahid vowed to prevent “Fascist rule.” He urged students to protect the Hindu minority and their places of worship.
Nahid was born in Dhaka in 1998. He is married and has a younger brother, Nakib. His father is a teacher. His mother is a homemaker. Nakib, a geography student, spoke about Nahid. “He has great stamina. He always said the country needed change. Police picked him up and tortured him. They left him unconscious on the road. Despite this, he keeps fighting. We believe in him. We are proud of him.”
