TikTok Live Ban in Pakistan Is Not What You Think

The TikTok Live ban in Pakistan is one of the most viral tech stories of July 2026, and also one of the most misunderstood. Thousands of Pakistani creators, viewers, and social media users are confused about whether the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked TikTok Live. The short answer is: PTA has not blocked it. TikTok itself never turned it on for Pakistan in the first place.

What the Viral Claim Actually Says

In mid-July 2026, posts started spreading on Pakistani social media saying the government was planning to ban TikTok Live over vulgar content. Some posts added that banks would be told to stop payments to creators who earn through the Live gifting feature. The claims spread fast, partly because a public figure shared a post criticising Live streamers for what she called harmful content reaching young audiences.

Despite the widespread circulation of these claims, there is no official statement from the federal government or the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) confirming plans to ban TikTok Live or instruct banks to halt payments to creators.

The Truth About the TikTok Live Ban in Pakistan

TikTok Live is not officially available in Pakistan, and it has never been launched in the country in the first place. When TikTok’s main app was restored after previous suspensions in Pakistan, one of the key understandings was that the Live feature would remain unavailable.

The main TikTok app works normally, but the Live feature is region-restricted by TikTok itself and has not been blocked by the PTA, senior sources confirmed. This is not a new development. It is a longstanding arrangement between TikTok and Pakistani authorities, not a fresh government order in 2026.

According to officials familiar with the matter, the restriction is imposed by TikTok itself, not by the PTA. That single fact changes almost everything about how this story should be understood.

Why TikTok Kept Live Off in Pakistan

Officials have expressed concern that TikTok’s Live gifting and monetization system encourages users, particularly young creators, to produce increasingly explicit or sensational content in pursuit of higher viewer engagement and financial rewards. The argument is that this content is easily accessible to minors and could negatively affect Pakistan’s social and cultural values.

TikTok has repeatedly been subject to restrictions in Pakistan by the PTA over complaints about indecent and immoral content, with the first ban coming in October 2020. Each time the app was restored, content moderation commitments were made. Keeping Live off the table was part of that broader deal.

Criticism of Live stream monetization is not unique to Pakistan. Around the world, policymakers and child safety advocates have questioned whether virtual gifts and creator payouts incentivize risky or inappropriate behaviour in an effort to maximise earnings.

The Money Side: What Pakistani Creators Actually Lose

Understanding the financial stakes matters. On TikTok Live globally, viewers buy TikTok Coins with real money and send virtual gifts during streams, which convert into Diamonds that creators cash out at a minimum of about $50. TikTok takes approximately 50% of the gift value, but engaged Live creators with audiences of 20,000 to 100,000 followers can earn $500 to $3,000 per month from gifts alone.

For Pakistani creators who do manage to access Live through workarounds, losing that income stream would be real and immediate. If implemented as a formal ban, such a move would effectively suspend earnings for thousands of Pakistani content creators. But right now, those creators are already operating in a legal grey area.

How Some Pakistani Creators Still Go Live

Despite the official restriction, some Pakistani creators continue to appear on Live streams. Industry sources say these users may be bypassing regional restrictions by using foreign SIM cards, connecting through VPN services, installing modified versions of the TikTok app, or streaming through TikTok Live Studio using a foreign internet connection.

Sources also said that if individuals in Pakistan are earning and withdrawing revenue from TikTok Live despite the restriction, they are doing so via illegal means. That matters for the payment side of this story.

The SBP Angle: Where Payments Get Complicated

This is the part most coverage skips. As of mid-2026, there is no formal ban on TikTok Live earnings or bank withdrawals. However, any revenue generated through unofficial access to the platform could come under scrutiny by tax authorities and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), particularly if it involves unexplained inflows of foreign funds.

Because the feature is not legally available in Pakistan, the SBP could scrutinise or restrict unexplained inflows of foreign funds associated with TikTok Live earnings if they fall outside applicable financial regulations. However, sources stressed that no blanket banking ban on TikTok Live payments has been announced. In short, the money question is open, not closed.

Pakistan’s TikTok History Shows a Pattern

Unlike India, where TikTok has been permanently blocked since 2020, Pakistan’s approach has consistently been conditional and reversible. The PTA’s legal authority comes from the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), which allows the regulator to block platforms that violate content standards and to restore them when compliance commitments are made.

In Q2 2025, TikTok removed 25.4 million videos in Pakistan for community guidelines violations. The platform proactively removed 99.7% of these videos, with 96.2% removed within 24 hours, signalling a high level of compliance with local regulatory expectations. That level of cooperation is likely part of why the main app remains available.

For Pakistani creators who want to build a sustainable income, the wisest path is not to depend on workarounds. Pakistani creators who build strong audiences now, maintain clean account standing, and meet all content requirements will be immediately eligible when TikTok activates broader monetization for Pakistan. The best strategy right now is to build an audience, earn through brand deals in the meantime, and position yourself to benefit from expanded monetization when TikTok’s requirements for Pakistan change.

For a broader look at how Pakistan’s digital economy is growing, the recent news on Pakistan IT export tax being locked at 0.25% for three more years shows that the government is trying to support the tech sector even as it tightens social media rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has the PTA officially banned TikTok Live in Pakistan?

No. The Live feature is region-restricted by TikTok itself and has not been blocked by the PTA. There is no official PTA order as of July 2026.

When was TikTok Live removed from Pakistan?

TikTok Live is not officially available in Pakistan and has never been launched in the country. When TikTok’s main app was restored after previous suspensions, one of the key understandings was that the Live feature would remain unavailable.

Can Pakistani banks block TikTok Live payments?

There is no official decision from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) or the PTA announcing a ban on such transactions. However, the SBP could look closely at unexplained foreign income tied to a feature that is not legally available in Pakistan.

What can Pakistani content creators do instead of TikTok Live?

Creators can focus on brand deals, affiliate marketing, and cross-posting to platforms like YouTube where monetization is available in Pakistan. A smart 2026 strategy is to use TikTok to build your audience and then monetize better on YouTube (higher CPM) and Instagram (premium brand deals). Building a following now puts creators in a strong position if TikTok ever opens Live access in Pakistan officially.
