Amazon layoffs 2026 have wiped out more than 30,000 jobs across the company since October 2025, making this one of the biggest workforce cuts in Amazon’s history. Thousands of engineers, product managers, and cloud specialists are now searching for work in a job market that has grown far more crowded and far less forgiving than it was just two years ago. For Pakistani IT professionals eyeing Big Tech careers, or Pakistanis already working at companies like Amazon in the US, this wave of cuts carries a direct and urgent message.

Amazon Layoffs 2026: What Actually Happened

Amazon did not make one big announcement and move on. The cuts came in stages. The company eliminated around 14,000 corporate roles in October 2025, then added another 16,000 in January 2026, with further smaller reductions continuing through May 2026. In total, Amazon has shed over 30,000 positions, representing roughly 9 percent of its corporate workforce.

The divisions hit hardest include AWS professional services, Alexa AI, Prime Video, MGM Studios, Amazon Pharmacy, and human resources. These are not failing business units. AWS, for example, controls nearly one-third of global cloud infrastructure and grew at a 23 percent compound annual rate from 2020 to 2025. The cuts are not a distress signal. They are a deliberate pivot.

Amazon itself framed the layoffs as part of a move toward AI-driven efficiency, with plans to increase capital spending from $131.8 billion in 2025 to $200 billion in 2026. The company is spending more on AI infrastructure while spending less on human layers it considers redundant. That is a pattern repeating across Big Tech right now.

The Wider Tech Job Market in 2026

Amazon is not alone. Tech employers announced roughly 52,000 job cuts in the first quarter of 2026, the highest Q1 total since 2023. Oracle, Meta, Dell, and Amazon drove most of those numbers. The fintech sector added more pain, with PayPal cutting about 4,760 roles and Block cutting 4,000 earlier this year.

The headline numbers tell part of the story. The deeper shift is in hiring patterns. Software developer job postings have been flat to falling for well over a year. Overall tech job postings remain about 34 percent below pre-pandemic levels. At the same time, postings for AI-specific roles have surged 134 percent above pre-pandemic levels. The market has split into two very different realities running side by side.

Entry-level workers are feeling this split most sharply. At the 15 largest US tech companies, recruitment of new graduates fell 55 percent compared to pre-pandemic numbers. Around 21 percent of US hiring managers have already frozen entry-level hiring specifically because of AI tools. A further 36 percent say they plan to stop hiring entry-level workers by the end of 2026.

For workers already in the middle of their careers, the picture is also mixed. Senior engineers with clear AI experience and strong networks are still finding roles. Everyone else is competing in a crowded pool where hiring managers report receiving 800 resumes for a single opening, and most good hires still come through personal connections rather than job boards.

What Amazon Layoffs 2026 Mean for Pakistani IT Professionals

Pakistan has over 300,000 English-speaking IT professionals and more than 20,700 registered IT and ITeS companies. The Pakistani diaspora in the US includes a large number of engineers working at or aspiring to work at companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. The current wave of Big Tech layoffs touches both groups in different ways.

For Pakistanis working in the US tech sector: If you are currently employed at a Big Tech firm, now is a good time to build your AI portfolio openly and visibly. The workers surviving and thriving in this market are those who can show they have shipped real products using modern AI tools. Engineers who cannot demonstrate AI fluency are facing the steepest pressure at every level from junior to mid-career. Salaries have also softened, landing 15 to 25 percent below 2022 peaks for many roles, so salary expectations need a reset if you are currently job hunting.

For Pakistani professionals planning to join Big Tech abroad: The path into companies like Amazon is narrower than it was in 2020 or 2021. This does not mean it is closed, but it does mean you need a much sharper profile. Specialisations in AI engineering, machine learning, data pipelines, and cloud security remain strong. Generalist software roles without an AI angle are far harder to land. Building real, deployed projects with AI tools before applying makes a measurable difference.

For Pakistan-based IT professionals working remotely: Here is the angle that most coverage misses. When Big Tech lays off thousands of expensive US-based workers and simultaneously increases spending on AI infrastructure, it also pushes more companies to outsource work to cost-effective talent pools. Pakistan is one of those pools. Local research confirms that Pakistani developers earning dollar-linked salaries remotely have grown significantly, with PSEB-registered firms increasingly serving US clients directly. AI engineers, data scientists, and cloud specialists based in Pakistan can command between $5,000 and $12,000 per month for remote roles in 2026. The Amazon-driven talent flood into the US job market creates pressure on US salaries, but it can actually increase demand for skilled, lower-cost Pakistani engineers at mid-market and startup companies that cannot afford recently-laid-off Big Tech workers.

Pakistan’s BPO and IT export sector has already crossed $300 million in annual revenue and continues to grow. The global trend of Big Tech restructuring around AI, rather than shrinking overall, tends to create more outsourcing work downstream. That is a genuine opportunity for Pakistani engineers who move quickly on AI skills.

The Skills That Still Get You Hired

Across the global tech job market in 2026, the roles holding up best are those directly connected to building or managing AI systems. Data engineering, machine learning, cloud infrastructure, MLOps, and cybersecurity are all still in clear demand. Traditional generalist roles in web development, mobile app development, or basic backend engineering face more competition.

For Pakistani engineers specifically, AI engineering carries the highest earning ceiling in 2026. Strong English communication skills remain one of the biggest practical differentiators. Pakistani developers with solid English get hired at significantly higher rates than equally skilled engineers with weaker communication. Building a visible portfolio on GitHub, contributing to open-source AI projects, and getting AWS or cloud certifications all move the needle in a crowded market.

The lesson from Amazon layoffs 2026 is not that Big Tech is dying. Amazon reported 21 percent revenue growth in Q4 2025 and is spending more than ever on AI. The lesson is that the skills Big Tech will pay for have shifted, and the shift is permanent. Workers and students who treat that shift as an opportunity rather than a threat are the ones who will be hired in the next cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people did Amazon lay off in 2026?

Amazon cut approximately 16,000 positions in January 2026, following 14,000 corporate cuts in October 2025. Additional smaller rounds continued through May 2026, bringing the total workforce reduction to over 30,000 positions.

Which Amazon divisions were affected most?

The cuts hit AWS professional services, Alexa AI, Prime Video, MGM Studios, Amazon Pharmacy, and human resources teams hardest. The cuts were described as a strategic restructuring toward AI-driven efficiency rather than a sign of financial trouble.

Is the tech job market bad in 2026?

It depends on your skills. Overall tech job postings remain well below pre-pandemic levels, and entry-level roles are disappearing. However, AI-specific job postings have surged sharply. Workers with proven AI skills, cloud expertise, or data engineering backgrounds are still finding strong demand. Generalist roles without an AI component face the toughest conditions.

How do Amazon layoffs affect Pakistani IT professionals?

Pakistanis in the US tech sector face a tighter, more selective job market with lower salaries than the 2021 peak. Pakistan-based remote engineers, however, may see increased demand as US companies look for cost-effective alternatives to expensive laid-off Big Tech workers. The strongest opportunity lies in AI engineering, cloud, and data roles.
