WhatsApp usernames let you chat without sharing your phone number

The WhatsApp username feature is finally here. Meta announced on 29 June 2026 that WhatsApp will let users go by usernames instead of phone numbers, closing a longstanding privacy gap on the app used by more than three billion people. For millions of Pakistanis who rely on WhatsApp every day, this is one of the biggest changes the app has ever made.

What Is the WhatsApp Username Feature?

The new system lets users create a unique username linked to their WhatsApp account. Instead of exchanging phone numbers, users will be able to share their usernames to start conversations, making communication safer with new contacts, businesses, communities, and online marketplaces.

While the platform will continue to require a phone number for account registration, first-time conversations can now take place without revealing that number. This is a big deal for anyone who has ever felt uncomfortable giving their mobile number to a stranger, a new colleague, or an online seller.

WhatsApp itself explained the thinking simply: “When someone new walks into your life, a classmate, a neighbour, someone you meet at an event, sharing a phone number can feel like a big step.”

How Does the WhatsApp Username System Work?

Unlike traditional social media platforms, WhatsApp said usernames have been designed with privacy at their core. “There’s no directory to browse and no suggestions, people will need to know your exact username to contact you for the first time,” the WhatsApp team noted.

This design choice is very deliberate. You will not show up in a search. Nobody can browse a list of all usernames. Only people you choose to share your handle with can reach you. This keeps the system private rather than turning WhatsApp into a public social network.

To further strengthen privacy, WhatsApp is also introducing an optional username key. Users who enable the feature can require others to know both their username and a unique key before they can send an initial message.

Username Rules You Should Know

Usernames must contain between three and 35 characters, include at least one letter, and may only contain lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Think of it like an Instagram or Twitter handle, but with stronger privacy controls built in.

To prevent impersonation, WhatsApp will hold back usernames for high-profile people or groups, such as celebrities, public figures and government entities. So if you were hoping to grab a famous person’s name, that will not work.

WhatsApp says usernames are completely optional, allowing users to continue using the app with their phone numbers if they choose.

How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username Right Now

Reservations are already open. The Meta-owned platform has begun letting users reserve unique usernames before a wider rollout later this year when people will be able to choose to be found and contacted only by their handles.

Why reserve now? With billions of users on the platform, WhatsApp said it is opening username reservations early because “a lot of names overlap”, giving people an opportunity to secure the username they want before the feature becomes widely available.

Here is how to do it, step by step:

  • Update WhatsApp to the latest version on your phone.
  • For Android, go to Settings, found in the three vertical dots in the top right corner, then Account, then Username.
  • On an iPhone, go to the You tab, then Account and then choose Username.
  • You can choose your own, and you will be able to reserve it as long as it is unique, but you can also use the in-app generator.

If you do not see the option yet, do not worry. The company said usernames will roll out gradually over the coming months, with users receiving an in-app notification once the feature becomes available in their country.

What This Means for Businesses and Creators

Companies, organisations and creators with existing accounts on Meta’s social media platforms, Instagram and Facebook, will get the chance to claim their usernames on WhatsApp. This is great news for small Pakistani businesses that already have an Instagram presence and want to carry that identity over to WhatsApp.

Once usernames are enabled, people messaging a user or business for the first time will no longer automatically see their phone number. For freelancers and professionals, this adds a useful layer of separation between personal and work life.

If you use WhatsApp Web for your business communications, this update applies across all platforms including desktop. The launch follows months of development and testing across Android, iOS, Windows and the web.

Why This Matters for Pakistani Users

Pakistan has one of the highest WhatsApp usage rates in Asia. The app is used for everything from family group chats to running small businesses and placing delivery orders. Sharing your phone number with every new contact has always been a risk here, where phone numbers are also tied to bank accounts and mobile wallets.

The feature is expected to be particularly useful for professionals, freelancers, creators, students, and users who frequently interact with people outside their existing contact list. In Pakistan, that covers a massive number of people.

The new system also aims to combat messaging scams, offering greater security. Given how common WhatsApp scams have become, any extra layer of protection is welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will WhatsApp still need my phone number to register?

Yes. The username will serve as an alternative identity for starting new conversations, while the phone number will remain linked to the account for registration purposes. You still sign up with a number, but you no longer have to share it to chat.

Can someone find me on WhatsApp just by searching for my username?

No. WhatsApp said the change was designed as a core privacy feature with no public directory of usernames and no autocomplete suggestions, meaning users will need to know someone’s exact username to reach them for the first time.

When will the full WhatsApp username feature launch?

The app, owned by Meta Platforms, said in a blog post that over the “coming months” users will get the option to be found and contacted only by their username, and not their number. The exact date has not been announced yet.

What if the Username option does not appear in my WhatsApp settings?

Many users report the option is not visible yet. That is expected during the phased rollout, not a sign you did something wrong. Make sure your app is updated and wait for WhatsApp to send you an in-app notification when it reaches your account.
