The Punjab government has implemented a strict cap on transport fares to provide relief to the public and traders. Following successful negotiations with the Pakistan Mini Mazda Goods Transport Association, any increase in freight charges for diesel-based transport has been capped at a maximum of 25%. Authorities are now actively monitoring routes to prevent transporters from overcharging beyond these notified limits.
Anti Smog and Emissions Enforcement
To combat environmental pollution and smog, the Punjab Transport Department has launched a rigorous crackdown on smoke-emitting commercial vehicles. Specialized teams are conducting inspections across the province, issuing e-challans and impounding non-compliant trucks and vans. Commercial vehicles must maintain updated fitness certifications to operate legally on provincial roads.
Mandatory Biometric Verification
A new digital registration system now requires mandatory biometric verification for all commercial vehicle transactions. Using the PAK IDENTITY App, owners must verify their identity for the registration or transfer of any goods transport vehicle. This measure was introduced in early 2026 to ensure transparency in ownership and to curb the use of undocumented vehicles.
Registration of Out-of-Province Vehicles
The Punjab Excise department has mandated the re-registration or documentation of commercial vehicles registered in other provinces that operate within Punjab. Goods transporters based outside the province must now comply with Punjab’s excise standards and documentation to continue their local operations. This ensures that all commercial entities contribute to provincial regulatory standards.
Driver Compliance and Safety Standards
Updated safety protocols now require commercial drivers to meet higher professional standards to operate in Punjab. Every driver must possess a valid driving license, medical fitness certification, and a verified police clearance. These requirements are designed to enhance road safety and ensure that only qualified personnel handle heavy goods transport.
Transit Trade and Smuggling Controls
Strict regulations have been imposed on the transit of goods passing through Punjab toward international borders. New orders regulate “Cross Stuffing”—the transfer of goods between containers—and require specific Customs Security guarantees. These protocols aim to organize transit trade more effectively while preventing the smuggling of goods within provincial boundaries.
