During the COVID-19 pandemic, veterinary labs across the United States played a crucial role in helping people stay healthy. A study from Cornell University explains how these labs worked to test for COVID-19 and keep humans safe.
Lorin D. Warnick, who leads Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine, said the labs were very important. They increased COVID-19 testing. Veterinary labs usually check animals for diseases, but they quickly started testing people too. This helped public health groups respond better to the pandemic.
Warnick mentioned the Cornell COVID-19 Testing Laboratory. It partnered with Cayuga Health Systems to show how vets and human doctors can work together during emergencies.
Challenges Faced by Vet Labs in COVID-19 Testing
The study also discussed challenges the labs faced. They had trouble getting certifications to test people. These certifications are necessary for medical tests on humans. Overcoming these challenges was important to test more people and keep everyone healthy.
Researchers asked 76 veterinary labs about their work during COVID-19. Half answered, mostly from universities. Twenty-four labs tested people for COVID-19, mostly in universities and communities.
These labs tested almost 8.25 million people. Nia Clements, a student in the study, said teamwork between animal and human health experts is very important. They need to work together to be ready for future health problems.
Some university labs tested lots of people every day in their states. For example, one lab did 18,000 tests daily, which was a big part of their state’s testing. This showed how much vet labs help during health emergencies.
The study says vet labs should get more support in health planning. Warnick said it’s crucial for vets and human doctors to work together quickly during future health problems.
The COVID-19 pandemic taught us One Health principles. It showed how human, animal, and environment health are all connected to keep everyone safe.
