Pakistan’s and South Africa’s automobile markets have one thing in common: they both prefer right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles. Aside from this shared feature, automakers have introduced nearly identical vehicle models in both markets.
Automobile Manufacturers’ Offers
Automobile manufacturers have mirrored their offerings in both countries. For example, FAW and Chery introduced the same models, and their exit from both markets occurred concurrently.
This trend continued with BAIC’s BJ40, which was introduced in South Africa as the B40. Proton, for example, launched the Saga sedan in both countries, but with significant price differences.
Price Disparity in the Proton Saga
The Proton Saga sedan will be available in Pakistan in April 2021 and South Africa in September 2022. Surprisingly, both markets offer the same Saga trim levels, but the prices differ significantly.
Pricing Structure
The Saga is available in three trim levels in South Africa: Standard MT, Standard AT, and Premium AT (Ace), all with the same 1.3L engine and features. However, the prices vary significantly.
Price Distinction
In comparison, the Standard AT variant costs ZAR 199,000 (PKR 28.72 lac) in South Africa and PKR 39.49 lac in Pakistan
For this variant, the Pakistani Saga is 30% more expensive than its South African counterpart. In Pakistan, the Standard AT is 25% more expensive, and the Premium AT (Ace) is 19% more expensive.
Comparison of Taxes
While taxes may be to blame for the price difference, it’s worth noting that Proton X70 prices in Pakistan are much closer to those in South Africa. The price difference isn’t as noticeable as it was with the Saga.
