Russia surpassed Kazakhstan as the world’s second greatest mining power by generating 1 gigatonne of mining power in the first quarter of 2023.
According to the Moscow Times, which cited data from Bitriver, Russia was the world’s second most powerful Bitcoin (BTC) mining service as of the end of the first quarter of 2023.
According to the Moscow Times, Russia generated one gigatonne (GW) of mining power in the first three months of the year.
Country rankings in bitcoin as of the first quarter
The United States maintained its position as the leading country with the most substantial mining power, with 3-4 GW of mining capacity.
Following Russia with 1 GW, the Gulf countries are the world’s third-largest mining power, with roughly 700 megawatts (MW) of total power.
Canada, Malaysia, Argentina, Iceland, Paraguay, Kazakhstan, and Ireland are next on the list, with 400 MW, 300 MW, 135 MW, 120 MW, 100-125 MW, 100 MW, and 90 MW, respectively.
In prior years, Russia ranked third in terms of mining power generation, with Kazakhstan ranking second. However, by the end of 2021, Russia’s mining capacity had surpassed that of the United States and Kazakhstan.
Regulation’s Function
The regulatory changes that countries go through have a significant impact on their place among the leaders of BTC mining.
Kazakhstan is a prime example of this. When it was the second-largest mining power in late 2021, the country occupied 18% of the global hash rate.
However, by the end of 2021, the country was having an energy crisis, which shifted the government’s focus to the miners.
To confront the energy issue, the country used anti-miner actions like as cutting off their power supplies, tightening the regulatory framework, and instituting a differentiated tax rate.
These developments had an impact on the country’s mining power, and it entered 2023 with only 6.4% of the worldwide hash rate.
