The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has directed the National Institute of Health (NIH) to issue coronavirus guidelines following the discovery of a new strain known as BF.7 Omicron.
This strain appears to be immune to all types of defences (vaccine-induced or otherwise).
In light of the rising number of cases, authorities have begun monitoring passengers at airports, as well as vaccination and screening tests at the Torkham border.
The decisions were made at a COVID-19 and airport monitoring system review meeting led by NDMA Chairman Lt. Gen. Inam Haider Malik and attended by a team from the NIH and the CAA.
Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif, on the other hand, has stated that the coronavirus situation in Pakistan is completely under control.
He also issued orders to immunise all children aged 5 to 12 immediately. In addition, he directed the hiring of an audit firm to evaluate screening procedures at airports and borders.
He emphasised that there have been no coronavirus-related deaths in Pakistan in the last 15 weeks and expressed gratitude to the countries that donated the vaccines.
Finally, he praised the efforts of government officials and the NCOC in combating COVID-19.
