Logitech and Tencent Games are teaming up to create a cloud gaming handheld, and you may be able to get your hands on it before your Steam Deck arrives. The handheld will combine Logitech G’s hardware expertise with Tencent’s well-known software services.
The two are collaborating with Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now teams to enable gamers to play AAA games while away from their PC or console.
Unlike a Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch, which performs all processing locally, games on this cloud handheld would be rendered and played on remote servers before being streamed to the console. On the handheld, players would simply interact with them.
Today’s announcement is essentially a teaser. Aside from a promised launch date later this year, we don’t know how much the system will cost or even what it will look like. Handhelds are popular right now, and Logitech and Tencent both want to capitalize on that.
As a cloud-focused handheld, it’s safe to assume that Logitech will not equip it with the most powerful processing hardware available. This should reduce costs and make it more accessible to a broader range of prospective buyers.
With the proliferation of 5G and fast Wi-Fi, it appears that the wireless infrastructure is in place to support such an endeavor. Following some early hiccups, cloud gaming has come a long way in the last decade, with several major players, including Microsoft, Google, and Nvidia, now operating services.
