SsangYong, a South Korean carmaker, is going through some difficult times. Following its owner Mahindra’s refusal to invest in the firm and a failed takeover effort by bus manufacturer Edison Motors, the transaction was canceled due to the consortium’s failure to complete the payment for the acquisition before the deadline.
However, with a new buyer in the shape of KG Group, a chemical-to-steel company, it appears like SsangYong will eventually return to the fight with an all-new model, an SUV.
The Torres, named after the Torres del Paine mountain range in Chile, is designed to turn around SsangYong’s woes by reverting to the company’s tough design language. Small headlights and kinked LED daytime running lights to surround a narrow grille with vertical bars.
They’re joined to the bumper visually by a blacked-out central portion, which leads to the huge silver skid plate and massive air intakes on either side.
Front and rear haunches are prominent, as are squared-off wheel arches, a powerful shoulder line, and a heavily-contoured bonnet with grab grips on either side.
The upright glasshouse, like the Land Rover Defender, has a wraparound front and back windscreen design with contrasting silver C-pillars, where purchasers may request a lockable storage compartment.
Wrap-around LED tail lights and an extruded centre portion that resembles a tailgate-mounted spare wheel but simply contains the number plate recess are found at the back. The exterior is finished with a skid plate at the back and black plastic body covering.
