Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta, a well-known Pakistani professor, has been awarded the John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award for his contributions to global health research.
Dr. Zulfiqar was honored for his research work, “Maternal and Child Nutrition: The First 1,000 Days,” which included an assessment of evidence-based treatments in child and maternal health for underserved communities in the first 1,000 days after birth.
Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta is one of four scientists to receive the John Dirks Global Health Award, which honors the world’s finest scientists who have made significant contributions to global health research.
The Gairdner Foundation, a Canadian non-profit organization that grants the coveted prize each year, said in an official statement after announcing the award that Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta has always focused on improving the child and maternal health and nutrition of vulnerable groups.
About Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta
Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta graduated from Khyber Medical College in Peshawar in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in medicine.
For his great academic performance during his MBBS, he obtained the “Best Graduate of the Year” title and a gold medal. Dr. Zulfiqar earned his Ph.D. in 1996 from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.
Dr. Zulfiqar is also a member of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Royal College of Physicians of London, the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health London, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta has received various honors. Dr. Zulfiqar got the Government of Pakistan’s Pride of Performance Award in 2016, as well as The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Award.
