Ukraine responded skeptically to Russia’s vow in talks to reduce military operations near Kyiv and another city, as several Western nations expected Moscow to escalate its onslaught in other regions of the country.
More than a month into the greatest attack on a European nation since World War II, which has killed or maimed thousands, prompted over 4 million to leave abroad, and battered Russia’s economy with sanctions, talks took place in an Istanbul palace.
On most fronts, the assault has been halted by heavy opposition from Ukrainian forces, who have regained land while people remain trapped in besieged cities.
“In order to increase mutual trust and create the necessary conditions for further negotiations and the ultimate goal of agreeing and signing (an) agreement, a decision was made to drastically reduce military activity in the Kyiv and Chernihiv directions,” Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin told reporters.
He made no mention of other hotspots, such as Mariupol in the southeast, Sumy and Kharkiv in the east, and Kherson and Mykolaiv in the south.
“Ukrainians are not gullible,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated late Tuesday.
The Pentagon reported on Tuesday that Russia has begun moving extremely limited numbers of troops away from areas near Kyiv, a move that is more of a repositioning than a retreat or withdrawal from the fight.
“We should all be prepared for a significant attack against other regions of Ukraine,” spokesperson John Kirby said during a press conference. “This does not imply that the threat to Kyiv has subsided.”
In an intelligence report, Britain’s Ministry of Defense stated, “It is quite probable that Russia would aim to redirect combat strength from the north to their attack in the Donetsk and Luhansk areas in the east.”
Reuters was unable to quickly verify either side’s assertions.
The Moscow-backed self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic in eastern Ukraine may contemplate joining Russia once it controls the whole Donetsk area, according to its head. Kyiv has stated that such a move would be illegal.
Russia describes its offensive as a “special operation” to disarm and “denazify” Ukraine. According to the West, it launched an unprovoked invasion.
According to some observers, Russia’s commitment to stop fighting largely encompassed areas where it was losing territory.
According to Kirby, US soldiers in Poland are “liaisoning” with Ukrainian forces as they hand over weaponry, while a total of ten F-18 planes and more than 200 personnel are being moved to NATO member and Russian neighbor Lithuania.
