Vivo, a Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has filed a patent for a smartphone design with an extended display, aiming to compete with Samsung in the foldable phone market.
Although it is not a direct competitor, it serves the same purpose as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series.
According to 91mobiles, the patent was filed in May 2021 and only recently surfaced on December 2nd, with concept images.
The display spans from right to left, allowing more content to be crammed into a tablet-like form factor. When not in use, the extensible phone stretches from the right spine and can be clipped back.
The designs also hint that the smartphone can be manually extended with the use of a touch or a physical trigger, since it is equipped with a motor that can be automatically actuated to bring out the screen.
When the phone is extended, a triple-camera module can be seen on the left side of the phone, indicating that tasks such as accessing the rear camera may trigger the smartphone’s extension response. The front also has a punch-hole cut-out for the selfie camera.
The speaker grille is shown on the top of the patent drawings, while the USB Type-C connection is shown on the right spine.
With OPPO introducing a prototype phone named the OPPO X last year, more smartphone manufacturers are jumping on the foldable smartphone bandwagon. The Vivo sliding smartphone is still in the early phases of development, and no date has been set for when it will be introduced or available for purchase.
