Scotland will launch its first driverless bus network next week. According to the details, will run without any input from the drivers. However, in the event of an emergency, the drivers will remain behind the wheel.
1st automated local bus service
The world’s first automated local service, according to the operator, will transport 10,000 passengers per week on five single-deck buses over a 22.5-kilometer route. Stagecoach service policy director Peter Stevens stated following a test run near Edinburgh.
The autonomous technology on this bus has previously been tested, but this is the first time it has been installed on it that is now a registered local service.
Because UK law prohibits fully autonomous vehicles, which will travel at speeds of up to 80 km/h, will have a safety driver. Ticketing and passenger inquiries will be handled by a conductor.
These buses’ Advance Driver Assistance System (ADAS) checks for pedestrians using optical cameras and radar, while the onboard system detects other road users to avoid collisions. The control system’s artificial intelligence engine uses data from the to locate it and calculate the safest route.
Stevens promised that the new service would be safer, more fuel-efficient, and provide a better customer experience.
Although the autonomous technology has been tested previously, this is the first instance of its implementation in a registered local service, according to Peter Stevens, policy director of Stagecoach bus service.
The buses, which can reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour, will be equipped with safety drivers in order to comply with current UK regulations, which do not yet permit fully autonomous vehicles.
Drivers will not be required to operate the controls while in autonomous mode, and a conductor will handle ticketing and passenger inquiries.
To detect and avoid collisions with other road users, the buses will be outfitted with advanced systems, including artificial intelligence. To ensure the safety of pedestrians and other vehicles, optical cameras and radar will scan the surroundings.
