Former President Donald Trump said Kamala Harris “turned Black” recently. He made this claim at a gathering of Black journalists in Chicago. Trump questioned Harris’ heritage when asked if he agreed with Republicans calling her a “DEI hire.”
Donald said Kamala was Indian but now wants to be Black. He said,
“She was always Indian. Now she wants to be Black. Is she Indian or Black?”
He also said,
“She was Indian, then she made a turn and became Black. Somebody should look into that.”
Harris called Trump’s comments “divisive and disrespectful.” She said, “Americans deserve better.”
Trump’s comments are like his past attacks on Black political rivals. He spent years pushing a false claim that Obama wasn’t born in the US.
Harris’ mother was Indian, and her father is Jamaican. Kamala was born in Oakland, California. She went to a historically Black university, Howard University. She is the first female, Black, and Asian American vice president.

ToggleTrump Calls ABC News a ‘Fake News Network’ During Interview
Donald was interviewed by a panel including ABC News’ Rachel Scott. Scott asked Donald about his past false claims about rivals and his attacks on Black journalists. Donald said he had never been asked such a horrible question. He called ABC “a fake news network.”

Donald Trump said,
“I love the Black population of this country. I have done so much for the Black population, including employment and opportunity zones.”
He mentioned saving historically Black colleges and universities from financial trouble.
Scott asked if Donald thought it was okay to call Kamala a “DEI hire.” Donald responded, “Could be. Could be.”
Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, called Trump’s remarks “horrible.” He said they showed a lack of character.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called Trump’s remarks “repulsive and insulting.” She said no one has the right to tell someone how to identify.
Harris’ campaign said Donald can’t unite America, so he tries to divide it. They did not respond directly to his comments about her racial identity.
Donald criticized the event’s setup, saying it was hard to hear other panelists. He called himself “the best president for the Black population since Lincoln.” This drew groans from the journalists. He ignored a question about Lyndon B. Johnson, who signed the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act.
Donald ended by saying the event’s delay was a disgrace.
