The World Health Organization announced the end of a nearly year-long global health emergency for mpox, a viral disease that had confirmed cases in over a hundred countries.
WHO about MPOX
In July 2022, the organization declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern, and it backed down in November and February.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, declared the disease no longer an emergency on the recommendation of the organization’s emergency committee, which met on Wednesday.
The move indicates that the mpox crisis, which spreads through direct contact with body fluids and causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled skin lesions, has been contained.
According to the WHO director, there have been nearly 90% fewer mpox cases reported in the last three months than in the previous three months.
According to the most recent report, more than 87,000 mpox cases were confirmed globally between the beginning of 2022 and May 8 of this year. The WHO recently declared COVID-19 to be no longer a public health emergency.
“While the emergencies of mpox and COVID-19 are both over, the threat of resurgent waves remains for both. Both viruses continue to circulate and both continue to kill,” Tedros said.
The WHO tag is intended to initiate a coordinated international response and unlock funding for collaboration on vaccine and treatment sharing.
